From a physical perspective, small-sided games (SSG) like this 2v2 drill from Bayern Munich training is a perfect exercise to work on player's acceleration, decelerations, and change of direction speed, all within your team's game model. The set up is very simple: 20m x 20m pitch dimensions. 4 small goals and 2v2 with feeders around the pitch to bounce passes off. The goal here is to keep the intensity high so durations are short. Work:Rest ratio is around 1:2 so 30-45 seconds working, followed by 60-90 secs rest. Players swapping in and out. Approx 3 minutes high intensity work. It's not just a "small-side game". The place on the pitch where they play matters the most. 2v2 in that pitch place is a really common thing, basically it is 2+1 vs 2 so it makes it even more game realistic.
