A monumental Lamassu relief has been unearthed in Iraq, showcasing the country's remarkable archaeological heritage. This ancient Assyrian sculpture, discovered in 1992 by an Iraqi excavation team, was initially incomplete, with its head stolen in 1995. Thankfully, the head was later recovered and now resides in the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad.🗿 The Lamassu, a mythical creature depicted as a winged bull with a human head, held a significant place in Mesopotamian religious beliefs. Often portrayed with a bull's body, a bearded man's head, and eagle wings, the Lamassu represented strength, wisdom, and speed. These statues were commonly positioned at the entrances of cities, palaces, and temples to ward off evil forces and protect against chaos. 🏯 The Lamassu's presence can be traced back to the ancient Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh, written around 2100 BC. One of the most well-known examples is the pair of Lamassu statues from the Citadel of Sargon II, dating back to 721-705 BC. These massive sculptures, weighing approximately 40 tons each, were carved from gypsum.🪨 The Lamassu was a prominent feature in both the Neo-Assyrian (912-612 BC) and Achaemenid (550-330 BC) empires. They often adorned royal structures, serving as a powerful symbol of authority and protection. Inscriptions accompanying these statues often praised the ruler and cursed intruders, deterring enemies and safeguarding the inhabitants.👥 The Neo-Assyrian civilization was the first to widely utilize Lamassu statues, establishing their significance as a powerful symbol in ancient Mesopotamian culture.⚔️🗿 #iraq #monument #mesopotamia #iraqmonuments #ancient #scientific #historyfacts #History #facts #factshorts #shorts
