@ian_haggerty_rsa: While diving along the reef I spotted one of the ocean’s best masters of disguise — the peacock flounder. At first it just looked like part of the sand, but then it moved. These flatfish spend most of their lives lying on the seabed, perfectly camouflaged and waiting for the right moment to strike. Their bodies can change color and pattern in seconds, blending into sand, coral, or rock so well that even experienced divers swim right past them. When prey gets too close, the flounder explodes from the sand in a lightning-fast ambush. It’s a great reminder that sometimes the most fascinating creatures on the reef are the ones hiding right in front of you. Fun facts about the peacock flounder: The Peacock Flounder can change its color and pattern almost instantly to match the seabed. Like most flounders, both of its eyes are on the same side of its body so it can lie flat on the sand and still see everything around it. They are ambush predators and rely on speed rather than chasing prey. When threatened, they can suddenly swim away in a burst, flashing bright blue spots that may confuse predators. Divers often miss them completely until they move — then suddenly the “sand” swims away.
