in the silmarillion, tolkien mentioned how when dwarves propose to their loves, they don't propose with a ring or ask them; they give their partner a piece of armour. and thorin gave bilbo a piece of armour. you cannot convince me they weren't at LEAST crushing on each other

I never really thought about it, but Gimli likely would've heard all about Thorin's goldsickness. He would've heard of the paranoia and the madness from his father and uncle. and even though Throin broke free before their charge, I bet most of the company had no idea how free Thorin really would've been. Seeing that vest probably brings up more for Gimli than anyone can even possibly fathom, more than just seeing such a wealthy heirloom, or token of friendship. and that makes me really emotional😭

I can’t tell you how much I have thought obsessively about bilbo and thorin’s relationship, the tragedy. How clearly thorn’s gifts to Bilbo courting gifts and the look on Gimli’s face when that mithril armor saves Frodo’s life?? I think that their story is told and is known by dwarfs like it’s their version of Romeo and Juliet
