It’s pathetic that the average person today would call Oskar Schindler a hero and Joachim Peiper evil, even though both held high positions in and supported the same party.
Schindler was a promiscuous, drunkard swindler who built his business on slave labor, squandered his wife’s dowry, fathered and abandoned children through affairs, abandoned his wife, and died alone from alcohol poisoning.
Peiper was a, studious patriot who volunteered young alongside his brother, married a hardworking older woman for her character, and had a deeply devoted marriage. He called her his “bravest comrade,” “best friend,” “part of myself,” “gallant,” “courageous,” and “unflinching.” She remained fiercely loyal to him throughout their lives.
He took the blame for his men even when some turned against him at trial. After sending his wife away to safety, knowing the Communists were coming, he spent his final moments writing her a letter thanking her for being his lifelong companion. After their life in France, his wife wrote to their son that they wished to end their lives like the mythical couple Philemon and Baucis, who prayed never to live without one another. His son continued to defend him after his death.
Yet Schindler is celebrated as a hero while Peiper is condemned. The sheer absurdity of this propaganda is disgusting.
