Because when backing in, everything is stationary. No surprises. When backing out, there are people, cars, shopping carts, etc.

Same reason that forklifts are maneuverable. Your center turning axis is near where you want to turn vs pulling in forward it is all the way in the back

The front wheels turn and the back wheels don’t. (Not rotate, they all do that, rather steer.) If you put the front wheels into the space first and the back wheels are not all the way in, you’re just fucked. If you put the rear wheels in first, you can turn the front wheels and make the front come over to the curb. That’s all. If the back steered too you could go either way. So, to address the math, which is geometry, the front can follow a smaller arc.
