You won’t believe this one 👇 A 2024 study found that one muscle group predicts longevity better than your BMI (body mass index). No, it’s not your abs or your glutes. It’s your calves. Sounds wild, right? But once I read the details, it actually made perfect sense. The researchers looked at thousands of adults and found that lower-leg strength, specifically the soleus muscle (the deep calf muscle you use when your knees are bent), was a stronger predictor of aging well, mobility, metabolic health, and even mortality risk than BMI. BMI is just using your height and weight. It tells us almost nothing about how strong, stable, or functional your body actually is. But calf strength? That reflects something very different: Your balance. Your mobility. Your circulation. Your metabolic efficiency. Your ability to catch yourself if you slip. Your ability to stay active as you age. What’s the best part? You don’t need machines or a gym to work this muscle. A simple move, like holding a sumo squat position and lifting onto your tippy toes, fires the soleus, challenges your balance, strengthens the ankle joint, and trains the exact muscle this study highlighted. When your knees are bent in a sumo stance, your soleus works even harder and holding that balance lights it up even more. Try it and see how long you can stay balanced. (It’s a lot harder than it looks and that’s the point.) If your balance is a bit shaky, start doing this while holding onto the counter until you get stronger. 🫶, Cristina Sciavolino-Day, MD ** Educational post, not medical advice #seizethedaywithdrday #wellnessjourney #Fitness Muscle Strength & Fall Risk in Older Adults (2024): https://link.springer.com/article/10.14283/jfa.2024.68 Muscle Strength & All-Cause Mortality (2024): https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jcsm.13619
