It's interesting you mention Shakespeare as a pretentious interest because the actual plays themselves aren't pretentious at all, they're full of rude jokes and "low-brow" comedy. It's the modern academia around Shakespeare which is pretentious but you have to consider when Armand fell in love with those plays that academia probably didn't exist. So I think while he himself is pretentious about things he loves his taste isn't all that pretentious.
