@bionic_girl83: Don’t trust your power strips!! So last night at 3:31 A.M. The power strip that we had plugged in next to my recliner that had my ice machine and the heating pad, which were not on at the time, plugged into it, overheated and sparked. That then caused the ice machine to begin to condensate which caused water to drip down next to the already sparked power strip. Next thing you know it sparked again and now started a fire, but because of the water it put itself out. Thankfully, the smoke alarms went off which woke us up and we got out of the house. Frefighters arrived and found the root of the issue, and thankfully there was no damage to anything because the fire was put out so quickly by the ice machine. ##firesafety##firealarm##godisgood

You can trust powerstrips just fine as long as it's not cheap $6 walmart junk and it isn't overloaded. A good strip will have it's own breaker to prevent the surge from going too far. I paid $20 each for my GEs.

Wait you leave your heating pad plugged in even when off? That’s crazy. That would give me such anxiety.

heating pads should only ever be plugged directly into an outlet and you’d have to check the ice machine but that probably says the same. not everything can be plugged into a power strip!

We need more details. So you had two powerful things plugged into a random power strip? It was an old one? can we see what kind? My biggest fear.

I never knew I wasn’t supposed to plug my heating pad into a power strip. I do this every night and will be changing that pattern now!

Fire Investigator here…..the power strip failed because you had appliances on it. They are only made for ELECTRONICS. You CANNOT put any type of appliance(especially ones that heat and cool) because they draw more power then what the strip is made for. Luckily didn’t catch the whole house…which is what happens a lot.
