Kelly@42 :
I am a former research psychologist now teacher in Australia. The bullying and social influencing is one part of the ban, and I wholeheartedly agree with the Australian government on this ban, kids can learn resiliance and coping skills in so many other ways, the reason the ban is needed is because a clear message needs to be sent, it will take time and education for parents to understand this is a good thing. The part that you haven't included in your assessment is the very real changes in brain function and structure with prolonged screen time. I infact did my Masters thesis on this exact topic.
excessive screen time, is showing lower educational outcomes for students, this is fact.
As far as the argument that kids will find a way.... yep, they will. But that doesn't mean we should do nothing. Drugs are illegal , but we don't throw our hands in the air and say, if we can't stop all of it, we shouldn't bother trying. You used the example of fake id to buy alcohol, the laws don't stop it, but it is a deterrent so it isn't a free for all.
I agree with 99% of what you post , I love your content, it is very real and common sense . Im not disagreeing, rather adding insight to one of the less talked about reasons for the ban, its not just about people out in the world that can harm our children.
