I didn’t understand where this storyline came from at the time, but Backlund really did great in this role. I remember truly feeling like he lost his mind with his promos and staring at his hands after the crossed face chicken wing, kinda like he’s looking at the blood on his hands after committing a crime. It was really powerful for the time, but he then lost the title in 3 seconds at a house show (because Vince wanted to make people think house shows were worth paying more for tickets) and then he became a joke

Time is weird. At the time this felt like someone from a long gone generation coming back to become champion. But today it would be like 2010 Randy Orton becoming champion in 2026 (which he will in a few weeks).

WWE did that because Hulk Hogan never beat Backlund. So when Diesel beat him easily Diesel looked stronger than Hogan. But Diesel didn’t draw like Hogan so it was scrapped.
