Belaili from 40 yards out😳 🇩🇿 Youcef Belaïli’s 40-yard wondergoal vs Morocco — Arab Cup 2021 The goal came on 11 December 2021, when Algeria faced Morocco in the quarter-finals of the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar. It was an enormous North African derby, with both sides fighting for a place in the semi-finals. The match was already extremely tense, and after 90 minutes the score was 1–1. Algeria had taken the lead in the 62nd minute through Yacine Brahimi, who converted a penalty after Belaïli had been fouled. Morocco responded almost immediately, with Mohammed Nahiri equalising just two minutes later. That meant the match entered extra time with neither side able to separate themselves. Then came 102 minutes. An Algerian goal kick from Raïs M’Bolhi travelled forward into midfield. Belaïli received the ball around the halfway-line area, controlled it and turned. At this point, he noticed something crucial: Morocco’s goalkeeper, Anas Zniti, was well outside his goal. Rather than trying to carry the ball forward or find a teammate, Belaïli immediately recognised the opportunity. What followed was outrageous. From approximately 40 metres — around 41 yards — from goal, Belaïli unleashed a spectacular long-range half-volley. FIFA’s technical analysis later selected it as the best goal of the entire tournament, with all four members of its Technical Study Group choosing it as their favourite. The strike had a remarkable trajectory. It rose high enough to completely bypass the advancing Zniti before dropping back down towards the Moroccan goal. The goalkeeper desperately tried to recover, but the ball flew beyond him and into the net. Algeria 2–1 Morocco. The stadium erupted. It was especially remarkable because Belaïli didn’t have much time to think about it. He saw the goalkeeper’s position, trusted his instinct and immediately attempted something that most players wouldn’t even consider from that distance. FIFA’s analysis specifically praised the combination of his vision, instinct, confidence and technical execution. And the drama wasn’t finished. Morocco refused to disappear. In the 111th minute, just nine minutes after Belaïli’s wondergoal, Badr Benoun equalised, bringing the score back to 2–2 and sending the match towards penalties. The match ultimately went to a penalty shootout, where Algeria won 5–3. Belaïli himself successfully converted Algeria’s first penalty in the shootout. So the context of the goal makes it even more ridiculous: a fiercely contested Algeria–Morocco derby, 1–1 after 90 minutes, extra time, the 102nd minute, Belaïli receiving the ball around midfield, spotting the Moroccan goalkeeper off his line, and deciding to launch a roughly 40-metre strike over him. It wasn’t just a long-range goal. It temporarily put Algeria 2–1 ahead in a knockout match against Morocco and became the defining moment of an unforgettable 2–2 quarter-final that Algeria eventually won on penalties. FIFA’s technical team ultimately named it their favourite goal of the entire 2021 Arab Cup. In short: 1–1. 102nd minute. Algeria vs Morocco. Quarter-final. Extra time. Belaïli sees Zniti off his line. From ~40 metres. Half-volley. Over the goalkeeper. Into the net. 2–1 Algeria. Absolute madness. #algeria #fyp #football #viral #morocco
