@commonchordusa: January 8, 1990. A song was released that would become one of the most emotionally devastating recordings in music history. It hit number 1 in 13 countries, spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, and became the second best-selling single of 1990 in the UK . But the song wasn't originally Sinéad's. It was written by Prince in 1984, composed in about an hour. Engineer Susan Rogers said: "One day, he went into a room with a notebook and, within an hour, emerged with the lyrics. The song came out like a sneeze" . Prince gave it to his side project The Family. It sank without trace. Then Sinéad's manager brought her a cassette. When the label heard her version, Chris Hill sat with tears in his eyes. "I just sat there with tears in my eyes. Then O'Kelly rang up Sinéad and went, 'Chris is crying.' 'Was it that bad?' Sinéad asked" . Her vocal was recorded in one take, no compression, using an AKG C414B-ULS microphone . The video, directed by John Maybury, is just her face. That's it. And toward the end, a single tear rolls down her cheek. That tear was real. She was thinking about her mother, who died in a car accident in 1985 when Sinéad was 16 . The lyric "All the flowers that you planted, mama, in the backyard, all died when you went away" broke her open . "I was crying about my mother being dead," she said. "I'm still really messed up about it, even though I'm twenty-four" . The song won Video of the Year at the MTV VMAs (the first woman to win it), was ranked number 165 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs, and has been covered dozens of times . In 2015, she stopped performing it, saying she'd lost emotional connection. "If I were to sing it just to please people, I'd be lying. My job is to give you honesty" . She performed it one last time in February 2020. She died in July 2023.
