ENCAMPMENT CLEANUP: SITE #2 OF 8 Today we’re starting cleanup on site #2 of 8 across a very large private property in Riverside County. These encampments had been building up for many months. The Sheriff’s Department recently came onto the property to remove people who were occupying it without permission, and arrests were made during that process. Once an encampment is cleared, getting the property cleaned up quickly is extremely important. People come back. In fact, almost every day we’ve been working here, we’ve encountered people returning to the property who have no legal right to be there. Some have a difficult time accepting that this is privately owned land. But private property is private property. Walking onto someone’s land without permission is no different in principle from someone walking into your home without being invited. We try to handle every situation calmly and respectfully, but we also have a responsibility to protect our client’s property and keep the cleanup moving. The first individual shown in this video had already confronted us on Saturday while we were working at the property. There is also an important lesson here for property owners and property managers. Before this project, I spoke with our client about making sure the Trespass Arrest Authorization paperwork was filed with the county. Deputies asked about that paperwork again today. They were unable to locate it in their system at the time, but our client had already filed it. For the remainder of this project, I’ll keep a copy with me so it’s available when law enforcement needs it. If you own or manage private property, make sure your trespass arrest authorization is properly filed and keep a copy available. It can make a real difference when people return after an encampment has been cleared. Removal is only the first step. Cleaning the property quickly and keeping unauthorized occupants from returning is what helps bring the property back under control.
