In the centre of Mecca is the Great Mosque, called Al-Masjid al-Haram. In its courtyard is the Kaaba, a cube-shaped building covered with a black cloth decorated with gold. The Kaaba is the most important holy place in Islam. Muslims face towards it during their daily prayers, no matter which country they live in. They worship Allah, not the building itself. Every year, many people come to Mecca to perform the pilgrimage called Hajj. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able to do so should perform it at least once in their lifetime. During this journey, believers perform different religious activities. For example, they walk around the Kaaba seven times. Besides the Hajj, there is also a smaller pilgrimage called Umrah, which is not limited to the specific days of the Hajj. The city combines religious buildings with modern architecture. Around the Great Mosque, there are tall hotels, shopping centres and large building complexes. One particularly noticeable building is a tall clock tower that stands above the surrounding area. Roads and other transport routes help the many visitors reach their accommodation and places of prayer. For many believers, Mecca is a place of community, hope and inner peace. People from different backgrounds come together there, pray together and focus on their faith. The pilgrimage can also be an opportunity to reflect on one's life, ask for forgiveness and find new strength for everyday life. This is why Mecca has great religious importance far beyond Saudi Arabia.
