This passage describes a divine inspection. God leans out from heaven and scans the entire earth, looking for a single person of understanding, someone who truly seeks Him. The search yields nothing. The verdict is absolute: “All have turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one” (verse 3). In the original Hebrew, the word נֶאֱלָחוּ (ne'elachu) implies not just corruption, but a becoming foul or putrid, a moral decay that has poisoned the entire human community. The psalm then targets a specific group: “the workers of iniquity” who “eat up My people as they eat bread.” The 11th‑century commentator Rashi explains these oppressors as the leaders of the generation, like King Nebuchadnezzar and his officers, who “devoured” Israel as easily as eating bread, without ever calling upon God. This is not a cynical view of humanity, but a prophetic warning addressed to the powerful. In the context of the First Temple period, it describes a society where the powerful are corrupt, the weak are devoured, and God is absent from the public square. Yet, the very act of singing this psalm is a defiant act. The psalmist declares the problem and invites us to become the exception, the one who does seek, who does call upon the Name, and who refuses to join the silent, corrupt majority.#psalms #psalm #jewishtiktok #torahsoul #SoulOfTorah
