Hello, your enthousiam is infectious ! Could you tell me if Beowulf is writen in old or modern english ? ( i'm french, old english would be far above my level).

I went to a lecture recently on Beowulf and the lecturer focussed heavily on how Grendel’s mother is a representation of what the men aren’t able to embody. The contrast between the fierce female to the subordinate males. It was super interesting!

This might be silly, but everytime I see one of your videos it makes me happy to hear someone talking so happily about books.
As a kid I never had friends or family who read. I was always alone, and unfortunately it hasn't really changed as an adult. It's lonely as I've never had anyone to talk to or geek out with about our favourite books, so it makes me happy to hear people speak about any and all literature with such enthusiasm ❤️

I remember in my Estonian Lit. class we would compare Beowulf to our national epic Kalevipoeg which had a surprising amount of similarities! It always made me wonder what the Kalevipoeg equivalent of Grendel’s mother would be, since most of Kalevipoeg’s enemies seem more like demons or giants than a vengeful maternal monster 🫣

Beowulf was a heavy topic in one of my British Lit classes, and spent quite a bit of time on it, especially on Grendel’s mother. I’d love to hear your views on her, playing devil’s advocate, so to speak.

your unfocused and fast way of speaking, at least in this video, made me focus completely on it. May be this is what we need
