Stop! Take a minute to dance like a jelly! This Colobonema sericeum belongs to a group of jellies called hydrozoans — a small class of predatory animals that live in the midwater or twilight zone of the Ocean. Dr. Dhugal Lindsay works for the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, and he sailed on Falkor in 2020 during two expeditions in Australian waters. His friends call him “The Jellyman,” and he wrote a blog post about his specialty — squishy, gelatinous critters. Lindsay noted that Colobonema develop directly from larvae into a small, swimming jellies. While most jellies spend part of their life cycle attached to the seafloor as a polyp, there are not many hard surfaces for a polyp to attach to in the open Ocean, so direct development into free-swimming larvae allowed this group to be very successful in the water column. Also known as silky jellies, they are most famous for their long tentacles that can be detached when needed to escape. “This is an amazing adaptation for surviving predation, because shedding tentacles cuts down on water resistance, allowing the jelly to cover more distance with each pulse of its bell,” Lindsay wrote. “Additionally, the tentacles produce light (bioluminescence), which may distract predators long enough for the jelly to make its escape.” This illuminated disco dancer was observed during the 35-day 2024 #SEPacificSeamounts expedition. Researchers explored and characterized the biogeography of ten seamounts along these ridges. The science team said they found more than 100 species likely new to science. Using the ship’s underwater robot, ROV SuBastian, imagery, data, and samples were collected, which will be used to inform management plans for existing protected areas in the country’s jurisdiction.
