Chickenpox vaccine catch-up: answers before you book You have found the invitation, but the vaccine record still leaves you with questions. Here is what to check before the appointment. Does one catch-up dose mean the usual schedule has changed? No. This is a selective one-dose offer for an older birth cohort, not a new one-dose rule for every child. Younger children have different schedules. If other vaccinations were missed, the practice must check the whole record. What if we miss the invitation? The England catch-up runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2028. It is not a one-day event. Ask your GP practice to check eligibility and arrange or rearrange the appointment. An invitation may arrive by text, letter, phone or email. Can my child have MMRV with a cold? A minor illness without a high temperature does not usually prevent vaccination. A high temperature or feeling very unwell may mean waiting. Tell the vaccinator about current symptoms instead of cancelling automatically or deciding suitability yourself. Before the appointment, mention immune-system problems, medicines that suppress immunity, and any serious reaction to an earlier vaccine or ingredient. MMRV is a live vaccine and is unsuitable for some children. Do not stop prescribed treatment to make a vaccination appointment possible. Take the red book or any vaccination record you have. A private clinic record can matter just as much as a GP entry. If a date or product is missing, say so. The practice can review the information; you do not need to invent an answer to complete a form. Ask what reactions to expect and when. Some MMRV reactions can appear later rather than on injection day. A fever or rash after vaccination should not automatically be treated as proof of infection or dismissed without considering how your child is feeling. The catch-up birthday range is specific to this England programme. It is not a rule that all older children across the UK receive the same offer. If you live in another UK nation, check your local NHS service before using an England invitation timetable. If your child is outside this catch-up group, ask which routine vaccination schedule applies to them. A younger sibling may have a different appointment from an older sibling. Compare each child's date of birth and record, rather than assuming the family follows one timetable. If gelatine is a concern, raise it before the appointment. The NHS lists two MMRV vaccines: ProQuad contains porcine gelatine, while Priorix-Tetra is an alternative to discuss with the vaccinator. Ask which product is planned and read its leaflet. Write down the question you most want answered before you leave home. It might be about a previous rash, an incomplete vaccine course or a medicine your child takes. Start with that question so the appointment deals with your actual concern. You can ask for an explanation in plain English. Saying that you are unsure about a vaccine record is useful information, not a parenting failure. The practical goal is an accurate record and an appointment that is suitable for your child. A missed appointment does not mean you should give up on the programme. Contact the practice to find a new slot within the offer period. If you have moved home or changed practice, check that your contact details and your child's records are current. The useful question is not simply whether your child has had 'their jabs'. Ask which vaccines were given, when they were given and which appointment is now due. Similar names can hide an important difference in what a vaccine protects against. Which question would you want answered before the appointment? Raj Patel, UK pharmacist. General information; individual suitability needs checking. Guidance checked 31 October 2026. https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/mmrv-vaccine/ #ChickenpoxVaccine #MMRV #ChildVaccination #NHS #Pharmacist
