@merideth_adhdeducation: Most sleep advice is designed for neurotypical nervous systems. ADHD brains show differences in arousal regulation and circadian timing. That means your brain may stay partially “on” at night, even when you’re exhausted. So instead of forcing perfect sleep, the goal is better-matched sleep strategies. Here are three that research and clinical practice consistently support: 1. Anchor your wake-up time. Waking up at the same time every day trains your circadian rhythm more effectively than simply trying to go to bed earlier. Consistency in the morning stabilizes the whole system. 2. Build a real wind-down buffer. ADHD brains don’t switch gears quickly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of low-stimulation time before bed, dim lights, quiet activities, and no emotionally activating conversations or problem-solving. 3. Give your brain a place to put its thoughts. Racing thoughts are one of the biggest sleep blockers in ADHD. A short “brain dump” list before bed can reduce cognitive hyperarousal and help your nervous system shift toward rest. The goal isn’t perfect sleep. It’s consistent, supported sleep that works with your brain instead of against it. My name is Merideth. I've started trying biphasic sleep. I always wake up in the middle of the night, so I've decided to stop fighting it. I'll sleep 3-4 hours, wake up and read a book in another room for an hour or two, and then sleep for another 3-4 hours.

Could we talk about how a lot of ADHD brains pass out instead of actually falling asleep at night? That's why we find ourselves waking up at like 3am

4. Change of venue. I find If I'm having trouble sleeping in bed, I can sleep on the couch just fine. My brain is like "No sleep, nap!"

Could you speak to how a brain dump list works? I feel like dumping my anxiety may make it feel worse!

After getting medicated I noticed the difference between when I was and wasn’t on them. I actually feel well rested and have been waking up rough around the same time as to when before I’d usually sleep in a few extra hours

I've found playing a handheld video game, that's cozy and calming really helpful for falling asleep.
