Kenneth Denning, 69, of Holland, Massachusetts, was sentenced Tuesday to 16 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release for crimes connected to his operation of Electric Blue in Tolland. Federal prosecutors say Denning controlled the business, where employees promoted and facilitated prostitution involving dancers and customers. Dancers typically paid house fees of up to $50 per shift. But the criminal activity extended beyond the club. In 2020, Denning obtained $149,900 in federal Economic Injury Disaster Loan funding after describing the business as an eating and drinking establishment. Prosecutors say he quickly transferred $20,000 into his personal account. Denning pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy offenses involving prostitution, tax fraud and money laundering, along with two unlawful monetary transactions. U.S. District Judge Victor Bolden ordered $549,999 in IRS restitution and $150,000 to the Small Business Administration. Denning also agreed to forfeit approximately $1.53 million. He must report to prison November 17. WHY WE’RE WATCHING: This case involved more than illegal activity inside a strip club. It included tax offenses, money laundering and misuse of federal pandemic assistance. Multiple agencies investigated, including Homeland Security Investigations, IRS Criminal Investigation, Connecticut State Police and state liquor regulators. Pandemic assistance was intended to keep struggling businesses afloat. It wasn’t supposed to become another source of money for criminal enterprises.
