I’m a school social worker. I recently had to contact CPS and the police when a group of MS boys catfishes their male peer in order to extort nudes from him. Kids absolutely know what they’re doing in the moment. They just believe that since they’re young they won’t get in “real” trouble.

The juvenile justice system has the best chance to rehabilitate these kids so they don't harm anyone else in the future. Kids who commit horrific crimes do NOT have the same recidivism rates as adults who commit those same crimes when they receive trauma-informed care. That's the entire point of a juvenile justice system even existing. Their brains are not the same as the brains of adults. And I say this as a survivor myself who is utterly horrified by what these young men did and who empathizes deeply with the survivor of the attack. I also say this as someone with some background in forensic psychology and a particular interest in juvenile offenders. We cannot sentence crimes based on our emotional reactions to the horror of what was done. We have to do what is most likely to protect innocent people and prevent future victims.

100% should be charged as an adult. juvenile cases are usually sealed or handled differently than adult cases. this way their charges STAY on record and it can’t be buried once they turn 18

Maybe we open the old cases and retry them as adult. Set precedence that sexual assaults and the willing participation of the assault get tried as adults. End of story. When precedence like this is set it will be used in future cases
