Can we slow down for a second? I think a lot of people are missing the communication issue here. If you give someone a very direct instruction like “flip it,” some people will simply do exactly that, follow the literal wording. Not everyone automatically interprets the intended meaning behind the phrase. Could he have asked a follow-up question? Sure, that’s always an option. But communication works both ways. The way something is phrased and the tone used can strongly influence how literally people take the instruction. For example, I’m autistic and tend to take language very literally. If someone tells me to “flip it,” my brain processes that as a direct instruction, not as “switch the containers.” So before calling it “weaponized incompetence,” it might be worth considering that sometimes it’s just a mismatch in communication styles.
