The bar floats bc of physics, an object in motion tends to stay in motion.

Its reading different when you move it because the bar has a resistance applied to it on its bearings, so it doesn't smash down on your body when you cant lift it.(to the people who have seen 'those videos', yes i know and those machines are not put together properly.)

I would love to do this experiment. A year ago my gym removed the cables that connect to the bar, so basically the machine got heavier. Everyone talked about how they essentially had to cut their usual weight in half when using the machine, and it also stopped "floating", if you drop the bar, it instantly falls full speed. Some people that did both the free bar and the smith said that they felt the smith was heavier than the free bar. (I think it's because the weight of the thing that sticks the bar to the vertical supports is no longer being lifted by the cables, so it counts towards the whole bar's weight).

Thank you! I knew at points it definitely feels like more that 25 pounds. This is the reason that I have 2 gym memberships now. PF for the comforts and the old gym for the accurate bench weights.

if youre wondering where you can buy one of these scales look near the baggage area of a store. I use mine to make sure my luggage is under 50lbs before I go to an airport.
