Wemby’s defensive IQ is actually insane. He knows the whole league fears him and that players avoid testing him under the basket at all costs. If you’ve been watching every Spurs game, you’d have noticed a stretch not too long ago where his block stats actually dipped, he was finishing games with only zero or one block simply because nobody would go near the rim when he was patrolling it. But I’ve noticed he’s really adjusted lately. Instead of just intimidating everyone and hunting every block (which just forces teams to find alternative solutions like shooting more threes), he’s started baiting them. He’s implemented methods like pretending to look away from the ball handler or drifting slightly away from the hoop just to delude the attacker into thinking they have an easy look or caught him sleeping, only to deny them at the last second. If you look at most of his blocks, he literally waits to jump until the exact moment the offensive player is fully committed to their shooting or layup motion and it’s too late to pass out. So yeah, he’s tall and physically gifted, but his IQ and adaptation to the game are what make him truly terrifying
