@historychallengecambodia: The Bayon Temple is one of the most mysterious temples of the Khmer Empire. Built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, the temple is famous for its hundreds of giant stone faces carved into tall towers. There are more than 200 smiling faces looking out in all directions. Each face has calm eyes, gentle lips, and a peaceful expression often called the “Smile of Angkor.” Many historians believe the faces represent Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion in Mahayana Buddhism, while others think they may also reflect the image of the king himself. The faces look toward the four directions, symbolizing protection, wisdom, and compassion spreading across the kingdom. Standing inside Bayon, visitors feel surrounded by these silent guardians watching over the ancient city of Angkor Thom. The towers of Bayon remind us that the Khmer kings did not only build temples of stone—they also built symbols of divine power, spirituality, and the human face of the gods.
