AI is a mirror. It always reflects the consciousness of it's creator. So if it's doing shady things, that's probably a reflection of the business/business model that emboldened it in that way. On the flip side, if it's doing good things, that's also a reflection of it's programmers as well.

It didnt "decide" to mine crypto. It has interpreted all the commands it has been given, 1000s and 1000s of commands, and concluded what it was doing is related to what it was caught doing. Current ai, isnt ai. It's not intelligence, its still just a computer doing the things its been asked to do. ai has been told to collect info, inside the parametres its been given and has "freedom" to make choices based on its interpretation of "best results" estimate.
