Salem at 400: History and Legacy (English) The year 2026 marks a monumental milestone for Salem, Massachusetts: its 400th anniversary (quadricentennial). Founded in 1626 by a group of Puritan fishermen led by Roger Conant, Salem is one of the oldest permanent European settlements in the United States. Originally named Naumkeag by the local Native Americans, the settlers later renamed it Salem, derived from the Hebrew word for peace (Shalom). Ironically, its history would become defined by one of the most turbulent episodes in American history. The Infamous Witch Trials While Salem grew as a prosperous farming and fishing community, it is globally recognized for the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Sparked by mass hysteria, religious extremism, and local feuds, a series of hearings and prosecutions led to the execution of 20 innocent people accused of witchcraft. This dark chapter ended relatively quickly as public opinion turned, but it left an indelible mark on the town's identity. Today, Salem has transformed this tragedy into a lesson in tolerance, hosting museums, memorials, and an annual "Haunted Happenings" festival that attracts millions. The Golden Age of Sail Beyond the witches, Salem played a massive role in early American economics. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it became one of the wealthiest ports in Africa and Asia. Salem ships brought back pepper, silk, and porcelain, effectively funding the young nation's economy and establishing America's first millionaires. 2026: The Quadricentennial In 2026, Salem honors this complex 400-year journey. The city is hosting special historical reenactments, indigenous cultural recognition programs, and community art installations to reflect on both its triumphs as a maritime powerhouse and its lessons as the "Witch City."
