Når vi skal derivere en funksjon som består av to funksjoner multiplisert med hverandre, bruker vi produktregelen. Produktregelen sier at dersom f(x)=u(x)\cdot v(x), så er den deriverte gitt ved
f'(x)=u'(x)\cdot v(x)+u(x)\cdot v'(x).
Vi ser på funksjonen f(x)=x^2\sin(x). Her kan vi sette u(x)=x^2 og v(x)=\sin(x). Da deriverer vi hver funksjon for seg. Den deriverte av u(x)=x^2 er u'(x)=2x, og den deriverte av v(x)=\sin(x) er v'(x)=\cos(x).
Deretter setter vi dette inn i produktregelen. Da får vi
f'(x)=2x\sin(x)+x^2\cos(x).
Den deriverte av funksjonen f(x)=x^2\sin(x) er altså f'(x)=2x\sin(x)+x^2\cos(x). Dette viser hvordan produktregelen brukes når vi skal derivere et produkt av to funksjoner.
