The country quickly split into two sides: the Nationalists, who supported Franco and more traditional or authoritarian ideas, and the Republicans, who supported the existing government and included many different political groups like liberals, socialists, and anarchists. The situation became international because other countries got involved; Germany and Italy helped Franco’s side with equipment and aircraft, while the Soviet Union and volunteers from many other countries supported the Republican side. Cities were heavily attacked and many civilians suffered, including the famous bombing of the town of Guernica, which shocked the world and later inspired a famous painting by Pablo Picasso. After about three years of intense fighting and destruction, Franco’s forces captured Madrid in 1939 and took control of Spain.
