The Greater Struggle: Jihad of the Heart (Jihad al-Nafs) Teaching by Dr. Kalim Kushi Founder – One True God Faith Mission 1. What the Prophet Taught The great messenger of God, Muhammad (peace be upon him), taught his followers an important lesson about struggle. After returning from a difficult battle, he told his companions that the big war was finished, but another greater struggle had begun — the struggle inside the human heart. This struggle is called Jihad al-Nafs. Jihad means struggle or effort. Nafs means the human self, desires, and inner feelings. So Jihad al-Nafs means the struggle to control yourself and purify your heart. This is not a war with weapons. It is a war inside the soul. 2. Why the War of the Heart Is Greater External wars may end, but the struggle inside a person continues every day. Every human being faces battles such as: Anger Pride Greed Jealousy Hatred Laziness Dishonesty These enemies live inside the heart. If a person defeats these enemies, he becomes a better human being and a true servant of God. That is why the Prophet taught that controlling the self is the greater struggle. 3. The Meaning for Believers of the One True God At One True God Faith Mission, we teach that the greatest victory is victory over the self. A believer in the One True God must fight daily against: bad thoughts bad intentions bad actions When the heart becomes clean, the life also becomes clean. God loves people who purify their hearts. 4. How to Practice Jihad al-Nafs Dr. Kalim Kushi teaches that believers should practice this inner struggle through daily discipline. 1. Control Your Anger When someone insults you, do not answer with anger. Choose patience. A calm heart defeats anger. 2. Fight Pride Do not think you are better than others. Remember that all humans were created by the One True God. Humility is a sign of strong faith. 3. Speak the Truth Your heart must love truth. Do not lie even when it is difficult. Truth purifies the soul. 4. Help Others Helping the poor, the weak, and the needy strengthens the heart. A selfish heart becomes weak, but a generous heart becomes strong. 5. Remember God Often Prayer, reflection, and remembering God help contr

Absolutely! Since you want to emphasize believing in one true God, doing good deeds, and avoiding evil, here are some relevant Qur’an verses along with explanations: 1. Belief in One True God Qur’an 2:21-22 "O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous. He who made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a canopy, and sends down rain from the sky, with which He brings forth fruits for your sustenance. So do not set up rivals to God while you know." Explanation: This verse emphasizes that there is only one Creator, and all worship should be directed to Him. Belief in God is the foundation for all righteous action. 2. Doing Good Deeds Qur’an 2:177 "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true righteousness is] in believing in God, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets, and giving wealth, despite love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; and establishing prayer and giving zakah; and those who fulfill their promise when they promise; and those who are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who are truthful, and those are the righteous." Explanation: Faith must be expressed through acts of kindness, honesty, patience, and helping others. Good deeds are inseparable from belief. 3. Avoiding Evil Qur’an 6:151 "Say, 'Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you: do not associate anything with Him, be good to your parents, do not kill your children for poverty, do not approach immoralities, whether apparent or hidden, and do not kill anyone whom God has forbidden except in justice. This He has commanded you so that you may understand.'" Explanation: This verse shows that avoiding evil is both about moral behavior and respecting human life. God commands people to stay away from wrongdoing even when others do not see. 4. Teaching Others Qur’an 3:104 "Let there be among you a community who invite to goodness, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong. Those are the successful." Explanation: Believers are encouraged to teach and guide others to fait
