@mohaewithjennypark: Replying to @onyinye Split the bill evenly? Itemized? One person cover? Tell me what you grew up with #wealthcodes #money #culture #whopaysthebill #statussymbols
im on team "fair pay" and move on. its really annoyingly tedious to have to keep track of what I owe a bunch of people.

It’s also tricky when friend groups have different socioeconomic circumstances!

I always order the most expensive and complicated meal, not for fancy but because I have IBS and lactose intolerance. So theres always additional charge. I prefer not to split because I feel burdensome. I generally ask them to run a spilt bill for me. However I tend to pay the bill for others when I am out, I dont particularly like the bill coming to the table, so I go to bathroom and pay the bill. But you must offer to ensure that people have finished ordering for the night. Its rude otherwise

I always think about comfort with pay splitting too. When we do split it, In my group of friends we normally always split the bill evenly even if some people got more or less. Mostly because nitpicking items assigns blame and is frustrating

Depends on the friends, meal situation, and just how we all are in that moment. As we tend to do both versions. Specially since we host weekly to biweekly events and depending on the group will either order take out or cook at home. And that will help differentiate when and who is paying for which situation.

that’s tricky. i come from lower middle class and for a long time was by far the poorest of my friendgroup. i wouldn’t have been able to pay for everyone because i wouldn’t have a large sum like that but i also didnt wanna stay home alone. so we split evenly back then

I’m a vegetarian who doesn’t really drink so splitting evenly is annoying for me. I wish I made enough money that it didn’t matter to me.

I’m 25- white- raised upper middle class- I agree with you that there is value to both! I appreciate friends who I feel it’s fair that I get the bill sometimes, and sometimes they do. As a young person, sometimes picking up a bill isn’t very doable though, so I appreciate just splitting things too.

It depends on who I’m with. I’ve covered the bill, split the bill, and let someone else get the bill. It’s really all about the situation.

Grew up in Hawaii and I did this with friends too. I’ll cover this time and then someone else will catch it next time 🥰

As a Korean American, I always grew up with my parents trying to pay for the bill, even for a group of 20 people, and I try to do the same as an adult when I’m with other Koreans. I married into a white family, and I thought it weird whenever my husband’s family would try to split the bill amongst family 🤷🏻♀️. And sometimes I get carried away and try to pay for the bill when with just my friends, but I never know if they get offended if I do that, but that’s just in my nature to want to pay for others.

I am Korean American but I used to be more “split the bill.” Nowadays I’m not so much bc I have found that my friends who are very specific about splitting the bill (like doing math at the table, down to the cent) are also the type to take advantage — they want to make sure I’m not “ripping them off,” but they never think about the things I do for them that I never expect repayment for.

Mexican American married to a Chinese American - every meal feels like hunger games with our families trying to pay. Both families come from the same sort of socioeconomic background. With our friends, similarly from the same socioeconomic backgrounds, we always just alternate. It balances out in the end. Dinners we alternate and when going out shopping or something we always bring each other coffee/tea, pastries, a book, whatever. So there’s always someone treating the other, but it is always reciprocated.

I prefer the Korean American way bc if I like you someone enough to go out to eat out with them as adults it will all work out over time

I’m white and my family and my friend group have always “traded” paying but like every culture and ethnicity and yes even white people, are not a monolith

I know you meant white americans, most Europeans also have fights over the bills, but every culture varies, Scandinavians and Germanic don't really do it

My Korean/hawaiian family was like this lol. It was so chaotic, my uncle once prepaid the night before our reservation and when my dad found out, my uncle was like "I beat you"

That’s a very white American issue, my friends and I are a diverse friend group who all come from means ( the “poorest one” has a family condo in Miami worth $4 million) and we all are just cover one another or fight for the bill.

i love both! If we go out with midwesterners, no matter the race, it had to be like traveling trip or special occasion. One guy is gonna get it and then another guy will get it the next. Butt if its mixed group of women, ages and from different states I find that we always split the bill bc everyone is in a different situation. Honestly, in this day age, I don’t mind if we split the bill because we’re all struggling 😭
