@hd.physics: Atoms are fundamentally smaller than the wavelength of visible light. You literally cannot photograph them with a normal camera, because light waves are too massive and wash right over them. To bypass the laws of optics, scientists at IBM Zurich built a machine that operates by physical sensation. Instead of using glass lenses, a Non-Contact Atomic Force Microscope uses a microscopic metallic needle. This needle is so incomprehensibly sharp that the very tip ends in one single, solitary molecule of carbon monoxide. It hovers just fractions of a nanometer above the sample without ever physically touching it. Instead, the quantum tip "feels" the microscopic repulsion of the electron clouds pushing back. By mapping this invisible physical resistance, a supercomputer translates the raw forces into a macroscopic image, revealing the perfect hexagonal carbon rings that build our universe. #physics #chemistry #Science #atoms #microscope
