@merideth_adhdeducation: When you’re emotionally flooded, the part of your brain that helps you pause, plan, and regulate isn’t fully in charge. That means reasoning, planning, and logic are temporarily weakened. Trying to “think your way out” of that state often makes it worse. ADHD is strongly linked to regulation challenges, especially under stress. The faster intervention point is the body. Somatic regulation works because the nervous system responds to physiological signals of safety before it responds to cognitive reassurance. Try: • Physiological sigh breathing (two short inhales, one long slow exhale) • Temperature shift (cool water on wrists or neck) • Deep pressure (press feet into the floor, squeeze hands together) • Orienting (slowly name five things you see) The sequence matters. Calm the body → restore regulation → thinking improves. You do not calm your thoughts first. You calm your nervous system and your thoughts follow. I use to think that these practices were very stupid. But then I had no choice but to try them or crash out and it changed everything! The body truly keeps the score so nervous system regulation is my first priority.

My biggest problem is that I get “lizard brain” when I’m unregulated. I simply can’t recall, let alone practice, tips like this in that moment of need. Currently, I’m going through a divorce that I didn’t want, and my RSD is in overdrive multiple times a day. There needs to be some kind of wearable tech that can recognize this state and somehow trigger a ‘center yourself’ alarm or electrical shock or…something.

This makes a lot of sense. Everything else keeps saying to stop & think about why you’re reacting. For me that doesn’t apply. I know exactly why I’m reacting & thinking about it is just going to piss me off more. My nervous system always goes to fight. I think these would help me change focus to get it out of repeat in my mind.

These are great tips! For me butterfly taps get me through (although not very incognito). The last thing on my mind is trying to remember to breath, let alone breath properly or controlled, so I start with the taps, focus on the taps and then when my brain is less overwhelmed I hum or do the inhale/exhale thing.

For me, I found that being outside in nature is when I am at the most peace. So when I'm super anxious (I am also meditated for anxiety) and I can't go outside, I pull up a YT video with a light stream and nature sounds. Fairly quickly, I'm back to being locked in.

Thank you! So many people like to talk about the symptoms but not many people give things like this that are practical and easy to implement. This is great!

I have been doing this. Last week was terrible. I had a breakthrough on Saturday. Apparently rode the wave and processed it instead of burying it. I was exhausted. But wow what a difference the next was.

Love this. I work with the home to help it support your regulation since homes are inherently not designed to make you feel safe and regulated.

This was perfect. Was doing as you talked, and do you do breathing walk-thru videos with the explanation at the beginning? Kinda like Win Hof breathing videos! 😁

I couldn’t believe how well this worked when I actually remembered to do it the last time I got offended that my back alley neighbor didn’t wave back at me lol.
