This equates to roughly 3.7 billion people, making it a standard part of the human virome rather than a rare medical anomaly. Most individuals acquire the virus during childhood through non-sexual contact, such as sharing utensils, towels, or receiving a kiss from an infected relative. Because the virus can remain latent (dormant) in the nerve cells for long periods, many people carry HSV-1 without ever experiencing a symptomatic outbreak, leading to a significant gap between the number of people who "have" the virus and those who "know" they have it.
