@kaybeearts: Can you believe it’s been almost 1 year since I first posted my comic, “Dating as an Asian?” At the time, I had no clue that the comic would go viral. I also didn’t anticipate the widely polarizing reactions. It seemed like if you saw the comic, either you found it funny, or thought I was a “self-hating race traitor who was appealing to the white gaze.” Still scratching my head at that one. It was honestly meant as a way for me to vent about one particular ex and make fun of his absolute dog💩 logic. (And many commenters back then pointed out it was just basically phrenology.) Definitely wasn’t prepared for the amount of crazies that popped out because of the comic. Some people went absolutely bananas because I drew myself in interracial relationships. I blocked several people because they would leave comments under my other posts referencing their distaste for this comic weeks, or sometimes months, after it was released. Anyways, this comic still remains as one of the most memorable moments from my career so far. “You look Super Thai” is a bizarre phrase that continues to repeat in people’s heads, mine included. Many people asked me if this was made up; of course I can’t recall the exact conversation, but I lifted many phrases that were said to me as inspiration for this comic. “You’re too dark to be Korean,” and “You have a Japanese face shape,” as well as his other responses, are exactly what he said. I always like to ask what ethnicity and then get super excited about THEIR ethnicity and not whatever one people "think" they are. it makes people feel good about being themselves and not what others want them to be
