@travismayo: What if language doesn’t just describe reality… What if it shapes how you see it? The movie Arrival explores an idea linguists have debated for decades #LanguageShapesReality #SapirWhorf #ArrivalMovie #Consciousness #PhilosophyTok
Another creator was discussing this same concept of how language shapes the way you think in the context of psychology. She was saying how in English we use “I am” statements, like “I am anxious”. So it seems like it’s a fixed part of your personality. I am. But another language she mentioned I believe it was Arabic, they say anxiety is passing through me. So it’s not a fixed state, it’s something that will pass. It’s not who you are or what you are or a part of you. It is mutable.

I’m African. In my language time exists because an event occurred. Not the other way around. So I don’t arrive at 9am… 9am occurred because that is when I arrived. I arrived soon soon.

This is something any bi- tri- multi- lingual individual experiences at different levels. Voice, intonation, perception, behavior or even personality shift with every language spoken.

In French, “I miss you” is “tu me manques” and it more translates to “you’ll be missing from me” and I love that so much

As someone who speaks English Spanish and German fluently… it’s crazy to see how my personality also changes depending on the language I’m using

i speak a west african creole language. we dont have a way to speak of a definitive future tense. so instead of saying “when” we say “if”. ill make my coffee when i go to work tomorrow -> ill make my coffee IF i go to work tomorrow. honestly, much more accurate way of perceiving the future since none of us actually know what will happen 🤷🏼♀️

That explains a lot. In my native language we don't have a future tense. I'm not actually depressed, I'm just grammatically incapable of seeing a light at the end of the tunnel.

Reminds me of my native language, we don’t say ( I love you ) we say- Wii oi niin ( My heart remembers you) I view it as a deeper knowing— we have always remembered a person who is meaningful to us, stretching beyond space and time.

George Orwell's 1984 also explores this where the government bans negative sounding words to shape the populations thinking. e.g. you can't say "sad" only "un-happy."

Similar to how language also influences behavior, I’m bilingual and I feel like when i speak English it feels more cold but when i speak Spanish it feels more warm and I feel it change my personality and behavior to more bubbly

Exactly. This is why etymology the study of word origins and how their meanings shift over time is often left out of standard education. When we don't know the history of a word, we don't realize we are living in a reality built by someone else's definitions.

In English, "I miss you" is a verb—it's something you do. In Romanian, "Dorul" is treated like an entity or a physical state that possesses you.

my personality changes a lot when I speak French! English “I miss you” vs French “you are missing from me.” Everything is so much more heavily romantic IMO
