@drjdbarton: When your standards keep moving higher, even success can start to feel like failure. Sometimes good enough IS good enough! #perfectionism #overachiever #unrealisticexpectations #selfcompassion #anxietyrelief
I believe you were supposed to hold my hand while you said this.

One time my therapist told me, “You can’t always be operating at your best, otherwise it wouldn’t be your best, it would just be your normal” and that shit blew my whole entire mind.

yes...like how if I don't get an "exceeds expectations" on my performance review, and instead get "meets expectations", then to me it sounds like "Needs improvements" and therefore, I am failing at my job.

As an adult I’ve realized my 50% is equivalent to others 100%. Now I’m great!

AND once you achieve your overachieving goal, now it's only achieving and your next overachieving goal is even harder.

My therapist asked me if I was aware I had an achievement addiction. Which was rude, frankly.

If I can do it, it was easy and therefore anyone could do it so it wasn't an accomplishment.

I constantly feel like I’m falling behind at work despite my boss literally telling me that I was working above expectations and that I should pace myself to prevent burnout. 😅

and it ONLY applies to me, I have to overachieve in order to be barely good enough, but I have no problem with the people who are just doing their thing

Oh wow, I needed to hear this for so many different aspects of my life. My PhD, pumping, as “just enougher” I keep feeling like I’m failing even though my daughter is fed. I just don’t have an oversupply.

When I got my MBA I didn’t even want to celebrate because it “wasn’t a big deal” my friends mouths dropped. Currently working on masters degree number 2 and it still feels like “no big deal” having to reprogram this noggin of mine.

After I completed my doctorate, my thought process was “ok that’s off my checklist”. I never thought of it as an accomplishment, and I am genuinely uncomfortable when my dad brags about my “accomplishment”. I also frequently ask people at work to not use my Dr title because I feel like I don’t deserve the title because it obviously had to be super easy to achieve if I have it because I couldn’t possibly have actually earned something that prestigious.

I would love to be able to accomplish my goal and not have the voice in the back of my head go “now do it again but better” or “but you didn’t do it as good as you could’ve so it doesn’t count”
