I wouldn’t call those downsides. You pick the health plan that is best for you. If that just so happens to be a HDHP then the HSA is great. Nobody says to get a HDHP just to get access to the HSA , it’s always 401k till match -> HSA till max if applicable-> Roth IRA till max -> 401k till max -> brokerage to infinity and beyond. The real downside of the HSA is non spousal inheritance is a taxable event of 100% of the value immediately. Trad you get 10 years to spread it out. I wouldn’t let that stop you from contributing to and investing in your HSA if you have one but it’s something to be aware of and might effect your withdrawal strategy depending upon your situation in retirement.

Definitely should do research. My husband has a chronic health condition in which HDHP actually was cheaper for us year over year.

now that bronze ACA plans are HSA eligible, the downsides of HDHPs can be largely avoided.
