Legally, you cannot call this handmade. The Federal Trade Commission would call this “hand finished”. If a machine creates the base product and a person only finishes it, it should not be labeled "handmade," but rather "hand-finished".

As a ceramic artist who makes their own 100lb+ batches of clay, own glazes and throws and paints everything myself i’m really sorry but this is definitely hand painted and not handmade (literally no hate! hand painted is still valid!!)

These are definitely hand-painted/hand decorated, not handmade. There's nothing wrong with something just being hand-painted, but to say "handmade" absolutely implies that you sculpted the vessel as well. If I were purchasing what was labeled as "handmade" decorative dishes, and found out that they were pre-made dishes, I would certainly have some issues with that. Again, there's nothing wrong with hand-painted dishes. They just need to be labeled CORRECTLY.

As a consumer if I saw handmade I would think that you also sculpted the clay but hand painted does also do a disservice to the amount of work you did. Maybe hand crafted would be a better term? ❤️

Hand-painted IS the right word though. It's false advertising if you did not make the item, because you did not make it...you painted it. If I sell a shirt and say it was handmade, but I only dyed it, that would be false advertising. It's very cute, but it is hand-painted.

I would say 90% of the making is definitely the vessel, if you crafted the dish and fired it etc thats most of the work, its more just hand decorated with paint resin and embellishments. Ceramic work is a long hard process

You are being very literal about the word handmade, but you need to know that as a consumer, handmade means you also made the dish from scratch and that’s what your customer would expect if you use that term.

As someone who hand makes things—this is handpainted. Beautifully so, but it’s two completely different skills and that’s okay. But saying it’s handmade is definitely wrong. Handpainted is no less valuable, just different, and that’s okay!

As a seamstress, if I make a garment from start to finish, it’s hand made. If I take a premade garment and embroider it, it’s hand embroidered. Both are valid, but it is different.

it really should be advertised as hand painted trays(whatever they’re called lol) and not handmade. you didn’t get clay and make the tray yourself. they were already made.
