From notes, it sounds like he was growling and grumbling at everyone. Many dogs come into the shelter this way—it can be a frightening place to be a dog. But while you may be forgiven if you are a 10 pound Yorkie, the same is rarely true if you’re a 75 lb Pittie. He was scared in playgroup so he was muzzled, and then he was even more unhappy & anxious. He was given 4 poor behavior notes in a single day, and that sealed his fate. Omega has calmed down remarkably since then. The first time I took him out, he was remarkably well behaved. Politely allowed me to enter kennel, came right up and put his head in my leash, and calmly walked to the rear lot, not reacting to the other dogs in kennels barking at him. He walks well on leash. And lets talk about affection: HE LOVES AFFECTION. Turns out, he’s an absolute fool for a belly rub. He was written up positively by a staff member after that, but it was too late. Another staff member said he was very barrier reactive in the kennel and he was put on ‘the list’. And with an upper respiratory infection, he cannot even leave the kennel to prove himself. Truth is, our world just don’t seem to make room for the pitties, especially the ones that look big, maybe even scary to most. But I keep thinking of Omega’s eager smile whenever I approach his kennel, his grin during the belly rub, and his wide eyed delight while I pet him. I cannot bear the thought of extinguishing his light, his delight. If you are interested but he is not yet off his URI meds, we may be able to arrange a place for him to stay for a few nights.
