get a sheet of plexiglass for both! it’s not real so you can drop things on it, wipes clean, and can be drilled into the wood and be a shiny protective layer

I done similar- but I had a local glass/window shop cut tempered glass for me the same size as my top, so I didn’t have to worry about polishes or chemicals. They have lasted me 9 years.
