Letter names are important, but they do not always help children decode words. Focusing on phonemic awareness and phonics allows learners to connect sounds to symbols, which builds strong reading and spelling skills. In the foundation phase (Grade 1–2), teaching letter sounds first helps children become confident readers because they learn how to decode words independently, rather than just memorising letter names.
