The five people you meet in heaven got my best friend to start reading consistently for like the first time in her life and she was I think 30 at the time. It also really bonded us with reading and showed her sooo many other books now she reads more than I do!

Beloved is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I vividly remember where I was as I read it (even though I read it over 20 years ago) and specific details from the book will forever be in my memory.

Beloved brought me out of a 10 year reading slump genuinely. As a child and teenager I would devour books, I challenged myself to read beloved this year and it brought make such immense feelings I couldn’t put into words. It reignited that feeling I used to get.

I avoided it for years because based on what I knew of it I expected it to be preachy. But people kept trying to ban it so I obstinately picked it up. A few pages into it I looked up and literally said out loud, “This is a goddamn ghost story!” (Note: I love ghost stories and this is among the best.)

Beloved is the great American novel. You can’t read it and not feel the haunting weight of our history. Morrison forces the reader to reconcile with the past in a way that no documentary or art from another medium has ever done to me.
