@sd_nerd3: Many people who know me will testify that I have always been vocal about South Africa (RSA) having more data centres. What I’ve mentioned here clearly illustrates why they are so important. Data centres are the physical backbone of the modern digital world. Here’s why they are essential: Storing Everything Every photo you upload, every email you send, and every Netflix show you stream lives on servers in a data centre somewhere. Without them, there would simply be nowhere to store the world's data. Powering the Internet Every website, app, and online service runs on servers. When you search on Google or open Instagram, your request is processed within milliseconds by machines located in data centres, often thousands of kilometres away. Enabling AI This is one of the biggest reasons today. Training and running AI models requires enormous computing power far more than any personal device can handle. Tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude rely on massive clusters of specialised chips such as Nvidia GPUs running 24/7 in data centres. Business Operations Banks, hospitals, governments, and retailers run their core operations including transactions, records, and logistics on servers hosted either in their own data centres or through cloud providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Cloud Computing Services like Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, and Microsoft 365 allow you to access your files from any device because your data is not stored on your laptop — it’s stored in a data centre. Resilience and Backup Data centres are built with redundancy. If one server fails, another automatically takes over. They also back up critical data to ensure it is not lost during disasters. The Trade-offs However, data centres also have challenges. They consume large amounts of electricity and water for cooling. A single large facility can use as much power as a small city. This is why the AI boom is creating global discussions about energy infrastructure, nuclear power, and sustainability. Conclusion In short, data centres are to the digital economy what roads, power grids, and warehouses are to the physical economy invisible infrastructure that everything else depends on.

Hosting of IT services over the internet. Everything is not necessarily in "the cloud". There are storage facilities somewhere in different regions 😅. Data Centres are like power stations for IT services 😅. Billions of billions in investments. The future looks bright 😎🙏

SA can have all these data centers(buildings)...still these Tech Companies etc Microsoft,Google,Nvidia and IBM...behind the Meta platforms will still controls those servers that route information😳

If we had these, there would be no need for the department of home affairs to depend on banks for cloud infrastructure

as much as many people are focusing on water needed, there are many industry alternatives like subzero cooling of computing systems...the water approach is the most expensive and chaotic to scaling .
