Samsung is one of the biggest technology companies in the world. Their products are recognised everywhere. But when you remove the name, what symbol truly represents Samsung? That’s the problem I wanted to solve. So I went back to the meaning behind the name itself. In Korean, Samsung translates to three stars. Even more interesting, those three stars were actually part of Samsung’s earliest logos before disappearing as the identity evolved. The answer wasn’t something new. It had been sitting inside the brand’s history all along. I took that idea and created two guiding stars moving around one another, representing direction and progress while forming an S through the negative space. The mark is balanced, simple and even works as an ambigram, meaning rotate it around and the symbol remains the same. The third star sits at the centre, bringing the original meaning of Samsung back into the identity. Now Samsung has something its wordmark could never achieve. A symbol that can sit quietly on the back of a phone, in the corner of a TV, across packaging or above a flagship store and still belong unmistakably to the same brand. No name required. The best brandmarks don’t just identify a company. They carry its story in a symbol simple enough for the world to remember. Samsung already had the story. It just needed a mark worthy of it.
