There is a limit called the Eddington limit. If a star becomes too massive, the radiation it produces pushes its own gas away, so it cannot grow much beyond about 150–200 times the mass of the Sun. However, a star can still become very large in radius when it ages and turns into a red supergiant, like Stephenson 2-18. Because its outer layers expand and become very thin and low-density, almost like a giant cloud. So that is why it wouldn‘t Defy the laws of fisics
