🌱🌸 Wondering what you can still sow in August? If you’re gardening in a mild climate (roughly Zones 7 to 9), there’s still plenty of time to sow a productive fall garden. 📅 Here in the Vancouver area, we have about 90 days until our average first frost, giving many cool season crops plenty of time to mature. 💡 Garden hack: Each month, I sort my seeds into a clear acrylic container from Dollarama. One side is for direct sowing and the other is for indoor sowing, so I have all of that month’s seeds organized and ready to go. 🥕 Food Crops 🌱 Direct sow outdoors: • Arugula • Beets • Carrots • Kale • Kohlrabi • Lettuce • Mesclun mixes • Mustard greens • Pak choi (bok choy) • Peas *(early August is best)* • Radishes • Scallions (green onions) • Spinach • Swiss chard • Turnips 🏡 Start indoors for transplanting: • Broccoli • Cauliflower • Kale • Pak choi (bok choy) • Swiss chard 🌿 Herbs 🌱 Direct sow outdoors: • Cilantro • Parsley • Chervil • Chives *(best after mid-August)* 🌸 Flowers 🌱 Direct sow outdoors: • Calendula • California poppies • Cornflowers (Bachelor’s Buttons) • Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist) • Sweet alyssum • Sweet peas *(late August into early fall for spring blooms)* 🏡 Start indoors for transplanting: • Foxgloves • Pansies • Snapdragons • Violas Late summer is one of my favourite times to sow seeds. Warm soil means quick germination, cooler nights reduce bolting, and many of these crops become even sweeter after a light frost. 💬 Comment “GUIDE” and I’ll send you my FREE Seed Starting Guide for Zones 3 to 10, complete with frost dates and monthly seed starting recommendations. Or head to my website to grab your free copy! 📍These recommendations are best suited to **mild coastal climates (approximately Zones 7 to 9)**. If you’re gardening elsewhere, adjust your planting schedule based on your local average first frost date.
