This is why Porco Rosso was such a sub consciously difficult movie for me to get into

This is something I’ve come across when realizing I’m not an introvert. It’s just the things I find fun are used as shorthand for “boring, unfun activities” and things I find boring are used as shorthand for “fun activities”

When I was getting into art in the early 2000s it was common character design advice to hear "give your villains big hooked noses and your protagonists small noses." Like people didn't even think twice about it

I've thought about this a LOT because of dming dnd and wanting to use shorthand storytelling to show not tell, but also wanting to avoid stereotypes

"vulgar" used to just mean ordinary, well-known, or common (generally in regards to people)

I think this is what bothers people about Francesca Bridgerton being gay. it's not that people dont appreciate representation, it's that we're again using normative visual language. thanks for this

yin and yang were never good and bad. they were two equals like dawn and dusk or sweet and salty - we just assume it's good and bad because of the colours

He's talking about shorthand. If you want a solution it means spotlighting your subject and rebuilding your visual language. Individual pieces of art do this. You build out your themes and perspectives so that the ending has meaning that you wouldn't have without the beginning. You can make a movie about how carmel is good but it will involve deconstructing and reassembling as a core piece of the movie so that in the end caramel feels inherently sympathetic.

I think what I've seen with other harmful tropes is that one of the steps is "subverting the trope". It doesn't just ignore or try to correct the bias, it plays off knowing some people in the audience will have assumptions and uses that for storytelling. oddly, when this exists in a medium long enough, the subversion of the trope becomes just another trope, and feels unoriginal or lazy. when that happens, both sets of assumptions seem likely, and the visual ques become useless for storytelling, so characters with those traits can be written without those being tied to the old assumptions
