Volcan Mountain is sitting right there — pine trees, open meadows, ruins from a 1930s astronomy outpost, and a 360-degree summit view stretching from the Anza-Borrego desert all the way to the coast. ✨ Trail Details 📍 Location: Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve | Julian, CA | San Diego County 🚶 Distance: ~5.5 miles ➡️ Type: Out & Back 🪧 Path: Fire road to single track through oak woodland, pine forest and open grassland ⏳ Time: ~2.5–3.5 hours 📈 Elevation: ~1,260 ft 🥾 Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging 🚾 Facilities: None on trail 🦮 Dog Friendly: Yes — on leash 🚗 Parking: Free — along Farmer Road at Wynola Road 🧠 Know Before You Go ⏰ Best time: Early morning — cooler temps and clearer summit views 💦 Water: 2 litres minimum — zero water available on the preserve ☀️ Exposure: Open switchbacks on the upper trail — hat and sunscreen essential 🌧️ Closures: Trail closes after half an inch of rain until dry — check before you go 🔭 History: A lone stone chimney halfway up is all that remains of a 1930s outpost built while astronomers scouted this peak for the Hale Telescope 🌿 Best season: Spring for wildflowers, fall for cooler temps and colour — snow possible in winter Nearly 3,000 acres of wilderness, eight species of oak, cedar groves and a summit that makes you forget you’re in San Diego County.
